The Ontario
Palliative Care Association is involved in a broad range of initiatives
and is taking a leadership role at both the provincial and national levels.
The Association’s recent accomplishments include:
- Representation
at, and participation in, the National Action Planning Workshop on End-of-Life
Care organized by the Health Canada Secretariat on Palliative and End-of-Life
Care
- Partnership with
the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA), and provincial
hospice palliative care associations, in establishing national standards
(i.e., “norms”) of practice
- Participation
with CHPCA in establishing a national accredited Nursing Specialty in
Palliative Care
- Leadership role
in a Canada-wide initiative to provide family caregivers with income
and job protection, which included submissions to the Ontario Ministry
of Labour and partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society (Ontario)
- A submission to
the Romanow Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada focusing
on key issues in end-of-life care
- Participation
in policy development to establish a provincial strategy for end-of-life
care
- Presentation to
the provincial government’s Cancer Services Implementation Committee
on the future of Cancer Care Ontario
- Dialogue with
government on the impact of Bill 130 (Community Care Access Corporations
Act, 2001) on home care services in Ontario
- Presentation of
the annual Dorothy Ley Award of Excellence in Palliative Care
and an OPCA Philanthropy Award
- Presentation,
in partnership with Humber College, of the Annual Provincial Conference
on Palliative and End-of-Life Care
- Presentation,
in partnership with the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association,
of the bi-annual National Hospice Palliative Care Conference scheduled
for the Fall of 2007 to be held in Toronto, Ontario
- Promotion of quality
education in end-of-life care through our bursary program
- Publication of
an issue-oriented newsletter for OPCA members
